Stonehurst Court, Southdown
About Stonehurst Court, Southdown
Clarke and Whalen were appointed as architects to design and seek planning permission for this development of 14 2-bedroom flats with associated parking and landscaping. It is located in the Harpenden Conservation Area and replaced a locally listed public house. The completed building was awarded a rarely granted 'plaque' award for design excellence by the Harpenden Society in 2017.
Project challenges
Any new building in a conservation area, and which involves the removal of a locally listed building will be examined closely by the Planning Authority. Clarke and Whalen worked closely with Planning Consultants to gain the support of planning officers, but the application was refused by committee. An appeal to the Secretary of State was successful, a decision reinforced by the design award from the Harpenden Society.
Service provided
Clarke and Whalen provided design services up to the stage of making the planning application, and assisted with the preparation of the planning appeal. Our client subsequently sold the development which was completed by others to our design.
